What's the Draw?

People of ages 5 and up play Cribbage. It's a simple game that can be learned in minutes - I learned it. It involves enough strategy to keep players coming back - the challenge never goes away. On the other hand, there is enough luck of the deal that you never know who's going to win. It's...

A Brief History of Cribbage

Cribbage was one of the earliest card games. We owe our joy in the game to Sir John Suckling (1609-1642) of England. It is said that Sir John created the rules for Cribbage by modifying an older gamed called 'noddy' (a word defined by Merriam-Webster as "a fumbling inept person"... hmmm.)

Object of the Game

  1. As you score points you will move your pegs along the board. The first person to reach the 61st (or 121st) hole wins.
  2. When dealt your hand you want to discard to the crib in a manner that will maximize your points in hand for both play and final count.
  3. If the crib is yours, discard good combinations to maximize your crib score. If the crib is not yours, discard poor combinations.
  4. Players attempt to form various counting combinations, as pairs, triplets, fours, sequences and fifteens. Combinations can be formed by the card played, or in the hands and crib in conjunction with the starter.

Rules of Play

Although you want to begin with the general rules for the game, you will want to investigate the more intense rules for tournament play. I've divided rules into the following...

  • General Rules for 2-handed, 3-handed and 4-handed Cribbage
  • Hoyle's Game Rules for Cribbage
  • American Cribbage Congress Rules

Equipment

Cards
A standard deck of 52 cards is used. The Joker is not used.
Cribbage Board
Cribbage Boards are made for 2, 3 or 4 players - one track per player. Each track will have 60 or 120 peg holes to keep score. There should be 2 leading holes for each track to stage your pegs at the beginning and one hole at the end for the winner.
Pegs
Each player will have 2 scoring pegs which leapfrog down the track as points are scored. Most boards come with pegs or you can buy custom pegs. Some people collect them!

Tournament Play

Tournaments are available to players everywhere. In the 2008/2009 season, Oregon will host 13 American Cribbage Congress affiliated tournaments scattered across the state. Many of these, especially the big ones like the Portland Grand National 27, are attended by players from across the country. The 2008 tournament hosted 534 players.
